Well Benedict Ratzinger in his interview turned book, God and the World, said that priests don't go around to the faithful anymore when they are very ill or near death, since that "makes people afraid." Well, I suppose if you reject sanctifying grace, as John Paul II, Benedict, and Francis did, there would be no need.
