Update: The example of Pope John XXII differs totally from the situation which exists now, to quote Charles Coulombe's account of the case in his book Vicars of Christ: A History of the Popes, p. 293,
Pope John XXII was involved in a theological controversy concerning the beatific vision. Even before he was pope, John XXII argued that those who died in the faith did not see the presence of God until the Last Judgment. He continued this argument for a time in sermons [apparently 3 times from what I have read elsewhere] while he was pope, although he never taught it in official documents. He eventually backed down from his position, and agreed that those who died in grace do indeed immediately enjoy the beatific vision.
Despite holding for many years a view widely held to be heretical, John XXII is not considered a heretic because the doctrine he had contradicted had not been formally defined by the Church until his successor, Benedict XII, addressed it by the encyclical Benedictus Deus, which formally defined this doctrine as part of Church teaching

CWR: Some people are saying that the pope could separate himself from communion with the Church. Can the pope legitimately be declared in schism or heresy?
Cardinal Burke: If a Pope would formally profess heresy he would cease, by that act, to be the Pope. It’s automatic. And so, that could happen.
CWR: That could happen.
Cardinal Burke: Yes.
CWR: That’s a scary thought.
Cardinal Burke: It is a scary thought, and I hope we won’t be witnessing that at any time soon.

Above is a selection from Francis' Homily at Casa Santa Marta on Friday, May 19, 2017, on the same day as the speeches of the dubia signatories, Cardinal Burke and Cardinal Caffarra, at the Rome Life Forum. Then, there is a video which seems like it is from Anonymous that speaks of the "filial admonition" given on August 11th to Francis. He did not respond, so the letter was made public.

  1. This "filial correction" is a small breath of fresh air. Finally a group, whose credentials are hard to ignore, have finally stopped dancing around the heretical acts and words of Vatican Conciliarists. Finally a group with courage to characterize the heretical words and acts of a pope as "heresy." This letter of "filial correction" is not a judgment against Bergoglio requiring authority, but a detailed set of observations by members of the Church of Christ of Bergoglio promoting heresy. These heresies began in his exhortation, "Amoris Laetitia," and the group points out that Bergoglio extinguished any doubt of its his heretical promotions in subsequent public speech.

    A Monsignor preaching about "Amoris Laetitia (AL)" at the pulpit during Mass in my parish some months ago stated that this exhortation contained nothing for parishioners to worry about. He proceeded to state that AL merely codified (my word not his) what the Diocese was already doing with regard to marital issues. This Monsignor was recently installed as the Bishop of the Diocese. As a result this group was wise not to waste a second in seeking participation from the Church's Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops. However, this "filial correction" puts every Bishop around the world on notice about complicity with the heresies described. Diocesan Bishops and parish priests are going to be inundated about these heresies. The dubia could easily be ignored, this "filial correction" cannot be ignored.

    There is a glimmer of hope here, but just a glimmer. "Amoris Laetitia" is heresy sprung from the three principle heresies contained in the Vatican II Constitutions. Even if this heresy is squashed, it will hardly be the last to arise unless Vatican II is exposed as heresy.
